On July 10th, the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA) deployed an artificial reef off the shores of Grayton Beach. Named Turtle Reef for its shape, this reef is the first in a series of 13 artificial reefs to be installed along the Gulf Coast over the next several years. Waves of excitement from the community have surrounded this new addition to Grayton Beach.
This project came about from the desire to raise awareness about marine life and ecosystems, especially after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. Schools have already gotten involved with the project, sending their students out to the reef to document its development and conduct research as more marine life is acquired. Reefs provide habitat for diverse species of wild marine life. Within months new creatures will be attracted to the site to make it their home, and more coral will grow. In the future you could possibly see an octopus or sea turtle on the reef! Everyone is excited to see how Turtle Reef develops overtime, but there is no need to delay your visit since the reef is already open to the public!
These reefs will become excellent sources of recreation for locals and tourists. Turtle Reef is close to the shore and can be easily accessed by snorkelers who can paddle board or kayak out to the reef. This is just another reason Grayton Beach is a great destination for your vacation or travel adventure. There is more to do on our beaches than just lying in the sand (although we love to do that, too!).
