While the Destin Seafood Festival may have been "Hurricaned" out in October, seafood lovers don't have to wait too long to experience fresh, Gulf Coast seafood in a festival atmosphere. The 50th Annual Florida Seafood Festival kicks off November 1 in the historic Panhandle town of Apalachicola in scenic Franklin County. This two-day festival celebrates the freshest in Florida seafood, paying special attention to the world famous Apalachicola Oyster. In addition to the food and music, there will be plenty of family fun, including an Oyster Eating Contest, an Oyster Shucking Contest, Blue Crab Races, The Blessing of the Fleet, a 5k Run, and a fireworks show. Headlining the event with a concert on Saturday, November 2, is Country Music star and 2013 Dancing with the Stars champion, Kellie Pickler. As part of Florida's "Forgotten Coast", Apalachicola provides visitors with a glimpse into a charming, small southern town filled with a strong, maritime tradition. It boasts miles of pristine beach, delightful locally-owned shops and boutiques and outstanding seafood restaurants. In addition to off-shore and deep-sea fishing, the shallow bays and inlets in Apalachicola and Port St. Joe provide guests with a unique opportunity to search for scallops. Just about two and a half hours away from Destin, a trip the Forgotten Coast provides a great opportunity to let the top down, and hit the road for an adventure.
