Sure Miami, Universal Studios, and Disney World are Florida staples, but there are plenty of vacation destinations in Florida that focus more on kicking back and relaxing. The Emerald Coast has its fair share of attractions and a bustling nightlife, but unlike Disney and Miami where it can be difficult to escape the turmoil, Destin and 30A provide plenty of opportunities to experience tranquility and serenity. The beaches of Destin, Fort Walton Beach, and along 30A are an oasis that is still undermined by Miami, Daytona, St. Augustine, and the like. While locals may prefer it this way, it would be unfair to not share the natural beauty the area provides. World ranked golf courses, private beaches, state parks, and the infamous Crab Island set the area apart from the competition. While the area seems to be picking up recently, it did take a hit after the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. Having moved here just 9 months ago, I am yet to see a reminder of the spill. The white, fine sand beaches are pristine. The waters of the gulf are clear, jewel toned, and warm enough to enter without shuttering for seven months out of the year. Even marine life, the sea turtles that nest on the Destin beaches, dolphins, and the pelicans that can be seen on a daily basis have all returned. So where are all the vacationers that have come for generations before the spill? One thing is for sure, those who have written off the Emerald Coast are only kidding themselves. I for one do not mind having a stretch of beach all to myself, but I feel like I would be doing the world a disservice by not sharing and reiterating over and over just how spectacular the area is. But in the words of Levar Burton, don't take my word for it.�
