Both avid and casual anglers are looking forward to June 1st, when Florida’s extended red snapper season begins. This year, red snapper season, in state waters, begins June 1 and ends July 14th, giving charter boat captains and fisherman a 44 day red snapper season. State waters run 9 nautical miles from shore, and the bag limit remains at 2 per person, or 10 per boat. Federal waters, however, have a much shorter season, beginning June 1 and ending June 26. Both the bag limit and the size of fish (16 inches) remains the same for both state and federal waters. Charter boat captains in Destin (known as the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village) are prepared for this extended season. With climate controlled cabins, restrooms, and experienced and knowledgeable crews, the charter boat fleet is ready to help locals and visitors alike bag some snapper. For many anglers, this bottom feeding fish is the perfect sport fishing fish. While it is both fun to catch and gives a good fight, it is one of the best tasting fish in the Gulf. Delicious grilled, steamed, broiled or fried, red snapper will be the catch of the day in many Emerald Coast restaurants this month, and certainly your kitchen or grill after you return from your adventure. If you’ve been considering a charter fishing trip, there is no better time to “get hooked†on fishing than during this red snapper season. Remember, you don’t need a fishing license or equipment when you book with a charter fishing boat, just some refreshments, your camera, and plenty of sunscreen!
